This one is a bit of a trick. Yes there are snacks that are good for your diet. Those bags of little carrots are right up there with the best of them. Crunchy, satisfying, tasty, full of good fiber. Keep some on hand to grab instead of high calorie snacks. Then the next time you get a check-up and weigh in you can say “What’s up Doc?”
TODAY: GET SOME CARROTS FOR SNACKING.
It’s the weekend. A chance to catch up on things. A chance to relax and recharge. While you’re relaxing go ahead and take a nap. After all you can’t eat when you’re asleep!
TODAY: TAKE IT EASY BUT DO A LITTLE EXERCISE TOO.
Night-time snacking can destroy the gains… rather… losses that you make during a day of being “good”. This week I’ll share some tips to help you stay on course and skip the desert course. So here goes.
Clean your teeth. Yes good oral hygiene is essential. Bad teeth can lead to all sorts of health problems. So this tip will help you in two ways. Right after dinner brush your teeth with mint toothpaste or swish some sweet cinnamon mouthwash. It will tell your brain you are done eating for the day while satisfying a sweet craving. If you want to insure that you won’t go ahead and eat again anyway, FLOSS. You won’t be tempted to hassle with it and you’ll really impress your hygienist the next time you get your teeth cleaned. As a plus you’ll have a really nice smile when you step on the scale!
TODAY: BUY A NEW TOOTHBRUSH.
If eating a quick lunch means a burger, shake and a large order of fries, then you’re eating 1500 calories in one meal. That’s a whopper! (Pun intended.) You can still have the fast food burger lunch, just make it a regular burger, small salad (no creamy dressings) and a low fat milk and you have cut over a thousand calories from that one meal. Cut a thousand calories from each day and you will lose two pounds. Honest.
You see 3500 calories equals one pound… of YOU. So by reducing your intake by 500 calories each day you will lose a pound in a week. A thousand gives you two pounds. That’s a nice slow reduction in weight that will keep you out of that dreaded yo-yo bounce. Add the 250 calories you will burn if you walk for a half hour and the healthful benefits of that exercise and you’re really looking good.
So in this economy where downsize has become a dreaded word, this is one that you want to be a part of.
TODAY: CUT 500 to 1000 CALORIES FROM ONE MEAL.
A lot of different foods that is. It will keep you satisfied. Eating the same kinds of food or the usual stuff doesn’t give you the satisfaction you crave, so you’re tempted to eat more. So try something different like tuna mixed with diced apples. The tastes actually complement each other. Just toss some different crisp vegetables.
Try some new flavors you may have not had in a while, like sardines, kipper snacks, cottage cheese, cold leftovers from the grill. Then add sides like fresh fruits, melon, nuts and even dried fruits. The protein will keep you satisfied longer. Just be careful about the portions.
TODAY: EAT SOMETHING NEW OR THAT YOU HAVEN’T HAD IN A WHILE.
One of the keys to eating less is knowing what it feels like to be full and what it feels like to be hungry. We tend to eat at the same times every day, and eat the same amount of food. But we don’t consume calories the same every day. You may mow the lawn one Saturday, but the next it rains and you sit inside watching TV. If you eat the same amount on both of thoe days guess what happens. Oh, I forgot, it already has.
When you are really hungry your stomach will rumble, you’ll feel sluggish, you get irritable. But think before you eat. How long has it been since you last ate? How much did you eat? How much are you planning to eat? Then get a nice big drink of water. Thirst and hunger are very similar to our brains. It’s not that you are filling your belly with water, you may be giving your body what it wants. The calories would have been bad. You would still be craving, and you would be craving that drink that you should have had in the first place.
TODAY: HAVE AN 8 OUNCE GLASS OF WATER BEFORE YOU EAT.
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking just a pint of water increased the study participants’ metabolism for about a half hour. They actually burned an extra 25 calories. That means that by drinking your eight glasses (4 pints) you will burn 100 calories! Researchers think that most of the effect comes from warming the water in the stomach. In guys the calories came mostly from stored fat, in women it came from stored carbohydrates. So that’s just another reason to drink up.
TODAY: BURN 100 CALORIES JUST BY DRINKING YOUR WATER.
